Orchestrating Least Privilege

The popularity of containers has driven the need for distributed systems that have the ability to manage resources, place workloads and adapt to faults. These so-called Container Orchestrators have seen a rise in popularity in the enterprise that is reminiscent of the early container adoption. Open-source projects such as Docker Swarm, Kubernetes and Marathon make it easy for anyone to manage their container workloads using their cloud-based or on-premise infrastructure.

Unfortunately, a lot of these orchestrator systems have not been architected with security in mind. In particular, compromise of a less-privileged node usually allows an attacker to escalate privileges to either gain control of the whole system, or to access resources it shouldn't have access to.

Given the popularity of containers in the enterprise, it is critical that we start designing orchestrators that are designed with security in mind, and follow the principle of least-privilege, where any participant of the system only has access to the resources that are strictly necessary for its legitimate purpose. No more, no less.

With MXNet developers have access to a fully-featured, flexibly-programmable and ultra-scalable deep learning framework supporting state-of-the-art deep models including convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and long short-term memory networks (LSTMs).

The API Strikes Back

These days many APIs are more than just simple REST services. Through WebHooks, APIs are talking back, giving us more information and prompting further action from our applications. But what is the best way to react to these demanding APIs?

We'll look at some services that use Webhooks, exploring reasons to use WebHooks and the emerging best practices. Then we'll look at the other side, implementing WebHook endpoints. Does consuming WebHooks make our application an API? What are the easiest ways to develop and test with WebHooks? We'll cover security, performance and standards all wrapped up with some live coded examples.

By the end we'll know how to handle anything an API can throw back at us.

More than 50 engineers work every day on opentable.com from our offices located in Europe, America, and Asia, pushing changes to production multiple times a day. Usually, this is very hard to achieve, in fact it took years for us to get to this point. After breaking our monolithic back-end into smaller parts, we tried to break the front-end into smaller parts too, called micro-sites. Then, we tried to elevate components as services, in order to make engineers able to create and consume them via clear and well-defined contracts and interfaces. This allowed us to put in place the infrastructure to optimise testing and to have hundreds of changes live every day without conflicts.

New approaches to distributed storage solutions

Clouditalia switched from traditional storage when started its activity, to a more suitable SDS for the business in which it's involved. We chose 2 brands: the first one, a HW&SW bundled one, the other one only software-based capable to recover the investments made previously.

Both made us innovators in Italy for the storage solutions, offering our customers great benefits in terms of performances and reliability. In this event we'll talk about the first solution adopted, since the second one is still in pre-production - it will be a matter of next time sessions. So, the first solution, Tintri, combines inside a single box either the HW component in hybrid shape SAS/SSD disks, and the software one, the so-called "magic inside the box", as defined by Tintri.

This software indeed makes the underlying disks extremely efficient thanks to a high compression factor and the capability to take over the needs of every single VM. This means that we can tune at a VM level (a.e. the "noisy neighbors") because it assigns SSD and SAS in the right mix dinamically depending on the actual activity of that particular VM. Furthermore, IOPS level is manageable in a very simple way in order for us to offer different storage profiles using the same solution - standard and premium storage. Lastly, beside these basic features, Tintri offers 3 more possibilities, everyone defined by a specific sw: Synchronous Replication & ReplicateVM, SyncVM and SecureVM.

Enhanced site search with cognitive APIs

Much of our data is structured: it fits into our schema, with known data types and bounds. This data is easily indexed and queried and is a "known quantity". A large volume of data does not fit this model: free text, images, binary attachments. This unstructured data is much more difficult to parse, query and to gain insights into. In this talk we'll learn how using machine learning techniques we can enhanced and add structure to our unstructured data, to unlock its potential.
